What Nasal Polyps Are

Nasal Polyps

What They Are and When They May Be Affecting Your Breathing

When nasal congestion persists despite standard treatments, or your sense of smell seems reduced, allergies or a lingering cold are often the first things people suspect. In some cases, however, soft growths inside the nasal passages — called nasal polyps — may be contributing to your symptoms.

At Atlantic Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers in Wall Township, NJ, nasal polyps are evaluated as part of a comprehensive nasal and sinus examination to determine whether they may be contributing to nasal obstruction, sinus symptoms, or breathing difficulties.

Talk to Us About Your Nasal Symptoms

What Nasal Polyps Are

Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that develop along the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. They are associated with long-term inflammation and often appear as smooth, teardrop-shaped tissue growths.

Nasal polyps themselves are typically painless. Many patients are unaware they have polyps until symptoms become persistent enough to prompt an ENT evaluation.

What Causes Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are commonly associated with chronic inflammation inside the nose and sinuses. Contributing conditions may include:

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Chronic sinus infections
  • Sensitivity to certain medications, such as aspirin
  • Conditions such as cystic fibrosis or eosinophilic disorders

In many cases, no single cause is identified. Polyps often develop gradually over time as part of an ongoing inflammatory process.

Symptoms That May Be Associated With Nasal Polyps

Because polyps can obstruct the nasal passages and interfere with sinus drainage, symptoms may include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion
  • Reduced or lost sense of smell or taste
  • Runny nose or postnasal drip
  • Facial pressure or fullness
  • Recurring sinus infections

These symptoms may overlap with allergies, chronic sinusitis, or other structural nasal conditions, which is why a comprehensive evaluation is important before determining the cause.

How Nasal Polyps Are Evaluated

An ENT evaluation typically begins with a review of your symptoms and a physical examination of the nasal passages.

Depending on the findings, nasal endoscopy or imaging studies may be recommended to evaluate the sinuses and surrounding nasal structures more closely.

Not all evaluations confirm nasal polyps. Swelling, infection, allergies, or other structural concerns may produce similar symptoms.

Treatment Options for Nasal Polyps

Not all nasal polyps require surgery. Smaller polyps are often managed with nasal steroid sprays or other anti-inflammatory medications.

When polyps significantly obstruct airflow or sinus drainage, procedural or surgical treatment options may be discussed.

Your provider will review your examination findings and discuss individualized treatment recommendations based on your symptoms, anatomy, and overall health needs.
