Understanding Your Allergy Triggers and Symptom Patterns

Allergies affect millions of people in the United States and may contribute to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, coughing, skin irritation, and breathing difficulties. Symptoms and severity can vary depending on the allergen involved and how the immune system responds.

At Atlantic Breathe Free Sinus and Allergy Centers in Wall Township, NJ, we provide comprehensive allergy testing to help identify potential allergy triggers and guide individualized treatment and symptom management recommendations.

What Is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing is a diagnostic process used to help determine whether the immune system may react to specific allergens.

Understanding your allergy profile may help identify potential triggers and support individualized allergy management strategies based on your symptoms, medical history, and environmental exposures.

Common allergens that may be evaluated include:

  • Pollen
  • Mold spores
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Certain foods, such as milk, nuts, eggs, soy, and shellfish
  • Certain medications when clinically appropriate
  • Insect stings or venom

Your healthcare provider will determine which testing approach may be appropriate based on your symptoms and clinical history.

What happens after allergy testing

Types of Allergy Testing at Atlantic Breathe Free

Our team offers several clinically recognized allergy testing methods.

Skin Prick Testing

Skin prick testing is one of the most commonly used allergy testing methods and may help identify immediate hypersensitivity reactions to certain allergens.

During testing, small amounts of allergens are placed on the skin surface, and the skin is gently pricked to allow exposure. After approximately 15 to 20 minutes, the testing area is evaluated for signs of a possible allergic response, such as redness or swelling.

Intradermal Testing

Intradermal testing may be recommended when skin prick testing results are inconclusive or when additional evaluation is needed.

During this test, a small amount of allergen is injected just beneath the surface of the skin while your provider monitors for signs of a reaction.

This testing method may be used in select cases involving medication allergies or insect venom sensitivities.

Blood Testing (IgE Antibody Testing)

In some situations, blood testing may be recommended when skin testing is not appropriate due to certain medications, skin conditions, or other medical considerations.

Blood testing measures IgE antibodies, which may be associated with allergic responses to certain substances.

Your provider will discuss which allergy testing method may be most appropriate based on your symptoms, medical history, medications, and overall health status.

How to Prepare for an Allergy Test

Before your allergy testing appointment, your healthcare provider will review preparation instructions with you.

Preparation recommendations may include:

  • Informing your provider about existing medical conditions
  • Avoiding certain antihistamines or allergy medications that may interfere with testing results
  • Wearing comfortable clothing
  • Eating a light meal before testing if recommended

Following preparation instructions helps support accurate test interpretation.

What Happens After Allergy Testing?

Once testing results are available, your provider will review:

  • Potential allergens associated with immune system reactions
  • Your symptom history and exposure patterns
  • Clinical findings and how they relate to your symptoms

Based on your evaluation, your provider may recommend an individualized allergy management plan that could include:

Medications

Medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays, or other therapies may help manage allergy symptoms in some patients.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy options may include allergy shots or allergy drops for appropriate candidates.

Certain allergy shot formulations are FDA-approved for specific uses.

Custom-compounded allergy drops are not currently FDA-approved in the United States and may be prescribed off-label under physician supervision when clinically appropriate.

Immunotherapy may help reduce sensitivity to certain allergens over time in some patients.

Environmental & Lifestyle Modifications

Environmental adjustments at home, work, or school may help reduce exposure to potential allergy triggers.
